Leighton Buzzard
LU7 3AD
The Leighton Buzzard Festival Singers was formed in 1951, the year of the Festival of Britain. It is a choir for four voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). We normally perform two concerts each year in Leighton Buzzard, usually in May and November/December and a carol concert at Christmas. We also perform at Summer fetes, dinners and weddings.
We rehearse every Monday evening during the school term from 7.45pm - 9.45pm. at Clipstone Brook Lower School, Brooklands Drive, Leighton Buzzard. LU7 3PG.
Our current membership is 68 singers.
What do we sing?
Mainly choral works, but our repertoire is varied. Recent concerts have included Bach’s Mass in B minor, Haydn’s The Seasons and Gounod’s Messe Solennelle. We also enjoy singing in our annual carol service.
Workshops
We have hosted four music workshops jointly with Making Music (formerly the National Federation of Music Societies). Three workshops have had the backing of the Association of British Choral Directors.
Overseas Tours
The Festival Singers have toured abroad on three occasions in recent years. In 2001, to mark our 50th anniversary, we travelled to France and sang at Notre Dame and La Madeleine in Paris and in Chartres cathedral. In October 2003, our destination was Salzburg, St. Gilgen and Bad Gastein in Austria. 2005 saw 95 singers and friends heading for Belgium, where we sang in Bruges, Brussels, Ypres and Mechelen.
Choir Tour 2011
In October of 2011, the Choir travelled to Belgium and Germany and performed various items from its repertoire as part of its 60th anniversary season. The tour included performances in Ghent Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral and the St Aposteln Basilica. A concert was performed in Bad Neuenahr near Koblenz.
Social Events
We are a friendly choir, organising social activities throughout the year. These include Quiz Nights, Bring and Buy events, Barn Dances and Summer Garden Parties.
